What is Homeopatic Medicine?

I have often been asked what is Homeopathy? It is a form of health care that developed in Germany and has been practiced in the United States since the early 19th century. Homeopathic practitioners are commonly called homeopaths. In Homeopathic treatment the aim is to stimulate the body’s own healing responses. Even with positive results the scientific community cannot verify the results to include Homeopathy as a main stream alternative.

How does it work? Homeopathy seeks to stimulate the body’s defense mechanisms and processes so as to prevent or treat illness. Treatment in homeopathy is individualized (tailored to each person). Homeopathic practitioners select remedies according to a total picture of the patient, including not only symptoms but lifestyle, emotional and mental states, and other factors.

These remedies come from plants, minerals and animals. They are diluted and adjusted to meet the individuals needs.  The treatment involves giving small doses of a mixture that would produce similar symptoms if given in a larger dose to a healthy person, this is called “like cures like”.

If you think Homeopathy is something new your wrong. In the late 1700s, Samuel Hahnemann, a physician, chemist, and linguist in Germany, proposed a new approach to treating illness. As he experimented on himself he located herbs that created symptoms in him similar to his ill patients. Then he concluded what made him sick could also treat him. This is coined “The Similia Principle” or “like cures like”

Basically your body is using natural substances to stimulate your immune system which creates the antidote to cure you.

In the eyes of the FDA Homeopathic Medicine is viewed as OTC and was regulated by the FDA in 1938. Remedies are required to meet certain legal standards for strength, quality, purity, and packaging. In 1988, the FDA required that all homeopathic remedies list the indications for their use (i.e., the medical problems to be treated) on the label.

Here is some general information that has been reported about risks and side effects in homeopathy:

Homeopathic medicines in high dilutions, taken under the supervision of trained professionals, are considered safe and unlikely to cause severe adverse reactions.

Some patients report feeling worse for a brief period of time, homeopaths interpret this as the body temporarily stimulating symptoms while it makes an effort to restore health.

Homeopathic remedies are not known to interfere with conventional drugs; however, if you are considering using homeopathic remedies, you should discuss this with your health care provider. If you have more than one provider, discuss it with each one.

Of course consult with your doctor if you choose to use this form of medicine along with your prescripted medicines.

Giving your body what it needs naturally is the way nature designed us when we are in need of repairs. Homeopathy is a alternative to the many natural ways that we have at our disposal. Hopefully, this gives clarity and takes out the mystery of this particular option.
